Homemade Hot Lemonade

reading time: ca. 1 min

Lemonade is usually associated with hot summer days. However, it's not summer any more (at least not on my hemisphere), and since my doctor advised me to drink warm water, especially in the mornings, i thought why not make a warm lemonade?

Citrus fruits are usually in season when it's wintertime over here, and the Vitamin C helps improve your immune system and prevent or treat common winter illnesses such as a cold. This drink is not a great way to hydrate and regenerate your body, but the orange makes it actually quite appropriate for the Christmas spirit, especially when you add a bit of ginger and/or a cinnamon stick!

You can easily turn this into a cooling summer lemonade of course by using cold water and chilling it in the fridge afterwards :)

HOT LEMONADE

Preparation time: 5 mins
Main ingredients:  lemon, orange, lime
difficulty level: easy
makes: ~ 1500ml
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, paleo, refined sugar free

Ingredients

Warm water, as much as needed (i used 1500ml)
1 organic lemon
1 organic lime
1 organic orange
2 tsp agave syrup, coconut blossom sugar or other preferred sweetener (optional) - i used 1 tsp honey each, which is ethically not vegan but i still eat it on rare occasions

Instructions

Boil water.

Slice your citrus fruits and place them into a fancy glass carafe, a mason jar or, like i did, into a big-ass jar. (I love these jars because the screw-on lids make them portable, so you can easily bring this to a picnic or in the car!)

If you don't have any organic citrus at hand, simply squeeze the juice into the water instead!

I used 2 slices of each fruit for 1 serving. So altogether 2 servings (2 jars full of warm citrus water). You could also toss some herbs (fresh mint leaves would work great!) or a few slices of fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick into this!

Now fill up the jars with warm water and stir in your sweetener of choice until it has completely dissolved. I recommend letting the citrus fruit soak for half an hour or so, until the water is properly infused. I actually added the juice of the remnants.

Don't the colours of the three green, yellow and orange fruits look super pretty?

Such a gentle way to wake up your body and start your day with some fresh fruit and hydration!
