Surprise post! Are you ready for some rum balls?

As a child i would always love rum truffles (i was a weird child, but what can i say). And when i asked my room mate earlier today what sort of a snack i should make, the first thing he said was rum truffles!

(actually he said "Rumkugeln" which is German for rum balls, and i love this word because the verb "rumkugeln" also means "to roll around" in German so it's like you roll around with rum balls, all happy and fuzzy :))

Anyway.

These smooth and boozy chocolate rum truffles are a German winter staple, however, i really don't think that it has to be Christmas time for you to indulge in the rummy deliciousness of rum truffles and you should make them all year round!

I looked through a couple of traditional rum truffle recipes, but they were all basically lumps of sugar and fat and alcohol, so i made up my own version from scratch.

From scratch with love! Yep.

Ingredients

1/2 cup soft dates, pitted and soaked *
1/2 cup nuts (what ever you prefer: almonds, walnuts... or a mixture!)
1/4 cup oats (gluten-free if gluten is an issue)
60g dark chocolate (i'm using organic 75% chocolate with coconut blossom sugar)
2 cm piece of vanilla bean, scraped out
1 - 2 tbsp rum (or rum flavouring), to your liking
1 tbsp orange sunflower oil or freshly squeezed orange (optional but recommended)

Cacao powder for coating

* actually i used a mixture of deglet nour dates and monkey apples, which is some sort of dried/candied fruit from Thailand (i'm not sure this is the correct name, but that's what the locals told me it was called - after searching google however, i suspect that they might actually be dried/candied Thai rose apple... i included a picture below next to the dates!)

Instructions

These truffles are so easy to make: Simply toss your ingredients into a food processor or a high-speed blender and process into a chunky mass. Then form into balls (i aimed for a walnut size portion of chocolate rum mass for each ball). So easy!

Roll the truffle balls in cacao powder until well coated, and set aside. Refrigeration is not mandatory, but i would keep them in the fridge for around 30 minutes to firm up until they're ready to be eaten.

Store in the fridge.

TIPS:
- If you like a more rum-ish taste, add more rum! I used only 1 tbsp of rum, and the taste was quite faint, so feel free to add another tsp or tbsp.
- Use a dark chocolate that has at least 70% cacao content to ensure that intense, dark chocolatey taste.
- They taste even BETTER after refrigeration or the next day!

BTW: I got myself these cute little violets today - because I'm in the mood to welcome spring into my flat - and because you don't need anyone else to buy flowers for you! :)

You also don't need anyone else to share these rum truffles with, buuut... it's always nicer to share, so i'm waiting patiently for my boyfriend to come home so we can devour these pretty balls (okay, maybe ONE has already found its way into my belly...)
